Hilton Malta Recently Received The Environmental Excellence Award

U.S. Ambassador to Republic of Malta presents award for outstanding eco-sustainable initiatives

ST. JULIAN'S, Malta - U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Malta, Gina Abercrombie Winstanley, presented Hilton Malta with The Ambassador's Award for Excellence for its innovation and environmentally sustainable practices. The award recognizes U.S. firms and organizations that are views as environmental leaders in Malta. The Ambassador's Award for Excellence is intended to recognise the U.S. firms in Malta that have been demonstrated the ability of being environmental leaders over the past year. The award recognises those organisations that are contributing to safe-guard environmental challenges by innovative and environmentally sustainable practices.

Hilton Malta received the award due to its Waste Heat Recovering Unit. Typically, the warm water waste produced from cooling hotel chillers is disposed directly into the sea. This year, Hilton Malta invested in a heat pump that uses the warm water as a heat source to pre-heat the hot water used by the hotel, which was previously done by gas-fired burners. The application of the heat pump was unprecedented and required the property to operate this equipment outside its design limits.

After a full year of operation, the gas-fired burners were no longer needed. As a result, Hilton Malta consumed 280m3 of LPG gas, with a net energy reduction of 2,000,000 kwh, a Co2 reduction of 280 tonnes and a net cost savings of or €120,000 per annum.
