Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City Completes $7 Million In Sustainable Upgrades; Largest Pace Project In The U.S.

Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City PACE event held on January 28, 2014 was an event to remember. Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City was recognized by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti for its completion of the largest PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) project in the nation. The ribbon cutting ceremony, where a duplication of the property's annual electric bill served as the ribbon, was attended by Rob Palleschi, Global Head, Hilton Hotels & Resorts, Willie Brown, former San Francisco Mayor, and other project partners. The PACE project upgrades included more than $7 million of green building retrofits that will lead to annual energy, material and maintenance savings of $800,000 and water savings of $28,000.

The comprehensive sustainability project includes energy efficiency glass installations and new LED lighting that will reduce energy consumption by a whopping 50 percent.  Additionally, the property installed 500 low-flow shower heads, 250 new bathtubs with  showers, elevators and more. In addition, Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City will receive utility rebates and tax incentives of approximately $1 million. The property is an industry-leader for sustainability in Los Angeles County due to the project's significant energy and water reductions and cost savings.

Hilton Worldwide understands the impact its business can have on communities and the environment. In 2009, Hilton Worldwide developed five-year sustainability goals to reduce energy consumption, carbon and waste output by 20 percent, and water use by 10 percent. The company has already achieved its waste and water reduction goals and is on its way to reaching energy use and carbon output targets. It also created LightStay!, a proprietary system of measurement that calculates sustainability performance across its portfolio of hotels.

In Los Angeles County, PACE financing is available to commercial, industrial and multi family property owners to pay for building improvements that save energy or create renewable energy onsite. Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City took advantage of this fixed rate, creating the largest commercial PACE project ever. The County formed a team of PACE experts in late 2012 to assist building owners and this is the second project to be fully completed. There are currently 35 PACE financing applications in the County's project pipeline, equaling more than $36 million worth of sustainable upgrades.

"Hilton Worldwide is setting the stage for green building upgrades in our community, and we hope other commercial properties will look to this project as a prime example of ways to save both money and greenhouse gas emissions."

The media event was followed by a 200-person luncheon to recognize those project partners that made this project a success. The theme of the event was "Green," with succulents serving as centerpieces and soy-based paint paperweights as takeaways for attendees.
