Easter In Athens
Return To Traditional Greek Flavors At The Byzantino Restaurant
March 10, 2010
ATHENS - As Easter falls early this year, we cannot be sure of the weather in the Greek islands, which is a good opportunity to discover the hidden beauties of Athens: old churches like the Monastery of Kessariani or St George chapel on Lycabettus hill, traditional neighborhoods like Anafiotika and even forests like those of Tatoe and Aghia Triada.
In a mood to return to traditional Greek flavors, which we all seek, especially during these “Holy Days”, the Byzantino restaurant of Hilton Athens recently started a new partnership with the traditional Greek delicatessen “Mandragoras”, enriching its buffet with original products from all over Greece. The vases and spices of “Mandragoras” stand next to varieties of cheese and bags with various beans, indicating that there has been a change in raw materials, in flavours, in the whole philosophy.
Once you arrive, they will serve you with hot pita-bread and a variety of home made Greek dips with smoked eggplant salad, chic-peas, caper and olive oil. Soon, it’s time for the buffet. Try a rich variety of Greek cheeses, like matured “graviera” from Mitilini, “gilomeni graviera” from Leros, “formaela” from Sohos, sardines from the village of Kalloni, homemade “dolmadakia” and “froutalia” (traditional omelet from Andros) with “feta” cheese and “siglino” (smoked pork). For main dish, choose stuffed zucchini flowers with rice and herbs, rice pilaf with saffron, grouper “spetsiota”, rooster with “hilopites” (Greek traditional pasta), lamb wrapped in vine leaves or mousaka. Moreover, the Byzantine chef will put on the spit fresh Greek meat, like pork, lamb or chicken, on a daily basis. Finally, enjoy one of the delicious desserts, like traditional Greek yoghurt with “glyka koutaliou” (traditional sweet preserves) or hot “loukoumades” (traditional kind of donuts) with honey.
With more than 50 choices per day on a buffet rotation, every day is a real delight at Byzantino. Especially during the “Holy Days”, Byzantino will feature Greek specialties and sea-food on Good Friday, the traditional “magiritsa” soup on Holy Saturday, a rich Easter buffet on Sunday with live music and kids’ entertainment, as well as a festive brunch on Easter Monday.
Byzantino operates daily as of 6:00 in the morning, while last order is at 1:00 after midnight. For reservations, you can call 210 7281400.
